  • Summer 2017 Technology Updates

    Greetings BAS Libraries,
    As we enter mid-August, I thought to share some departmental updates:
    • Clever: Our single sign-on resource has many more applications to offer this year, but knowing your building's curriculum, please use your own Clever admin logins to examine the available apps and recommend to me others to make available. I have added Edmodo, Remind (a fabulous and well-used resource), PBS LearningMedia, Makey Makey Labz, an NWEA app (important, perhaps, to Maltby), and several typing apps, in addition to social studies-oriented applications iCivics and Voters Ed.
    Also, related to Clever, I will need to know which buildings are using their own funds to continue with Achieve3000, so that I can roster in the app accordingly. Please inquire of your building principals.
    • MDM: After much deliberation and travel this summer, we will be proceeding with the paid version of Mosyle. Look for updates soon on how that change may impact the management of your iPads.
    • New website: A web-authoring and -hosting vendor has been selected: Blackboard. If you are on the website consideration committee, please take some dedicated time to examine the various templates and select your top three preferences. If you would like to be added to the consideration group, email me.
    • Curriculum: There has been a dedicated effort by Margaret and Tracie to map the elementary library curriculum this summer. As that project continues I would like to advocate for K-12 coherence, and encourage the middle and high school library faculties to consider desired student library outcomes, and begin their own mapping.
    • Introductions: Importantly, let's also welcome two new members to the group: Anna Wells, who transferred from a BHS classroom to the Hawkins library; and, new hire Courtney Lauer, who will be fulfilling the Hilton position.

  • Microsoft Office 365

    Due to the Brighton Area Schools' Microsoft licensing and because of your affiliation, you are eligible to enjoy the benefits of the Office 365 program. Office 365 offers many functions, but importantly for our purposes, it's less of a cloud and email and collaboration solution -- Google serves us in those capacities -- but rather a bonus means for acquiring software for home use. Some of the details include:

     

    • Software: Download multiple copies of Microsoft Office for your home devices at no cost, including up to 5 PCs or Macs, 5 tablets, and 5 smartphones.
    • Platform variety: As demonstrated above, there are even mobile versions of Office available.
    • Storage: 5GB of storage via OneDrive.

    An anticipatory FAQ section:

     

    • "Hey Chris, just wait a second, this seems familiar. What is the difference between this Office 365 announcement and the Office Home Use Program you emailed about back in November, 2016?"
      • Office 365 is freely available and downloadable for several installations, but only while you are affiliated with Brighton Area Schools as a student or employee. The Microsoft Home Use Program allows employees to purchase a single, current version of Office for $9.95, which will remain with the employee even after separation from the district.
    • "So, which version is better, how am I supposed to proceed?"
      • Well, that's certainly a personal choice. Frankly, my preference is always for the cost-free alternative, but that may color me as overly-thrifty. I actually don't find myself needing Office, though, my personal and professional office suite of choice is almost exclusively Google Docs. But, if I'm anticipating a non-BAS role and I love Microsoft Office, then the Home Use Program is a very affordable and more permanent path.

  • Microsoft Home Use Program

    BAS employees are now eligible to participate in Microsoft's Software Assurance Home Use Program (HUP). This program enables you to acquire a licensed copy of most Microsoft Office desktop PC or Mac applications to install and use on your home computer.

    Under the Home Use Program, employees who are users of qualifying applications at work (e.g. Office Enterprise) may acquire a licensed copy of the corresponding Home Use Program software (e.g. Office Enterprise) to install and use on a home computer for as little as $9.95. Use of this software is allowable through the term of your employment.
     
    To access the Microsoft Home Use Program Web site:
    1. Go to http://hup.microsoft.com/
    2. Select the country to which you want your order shipped.
    3. Enter your BAS email address and insert the following program code: 58B5FAD835. Note: This program code is assigned to our organization for our sole use in accessing this site. This number is unusable by anyone outside BAS.
    4. Place your order online, and it will be shipped to the location you have chosen. Please note that a fulfillment fee will be charged to cover packaging, shipping, and handling costs.
