    Our Concept Story: The Scribal O explains the short u sound that is spelled with an o before v, m, n, and th. According to the Scribal O story, these words were once spelled with u. However, the u was difficult to read in the flowing script, so scribes inserted a small cap above the u. The printing press interpreted this as an o.
