Principal's Message

      Dear Hawkins Families,

My name is Basia Kiehler, and I am overjoyed to begin my 5th  year with our Hawkins Elementary family as your child’s principal.   I am looking forward to another enriching and exciting year reconnecting with each of your children as well as meeting new faces so we can continue to build a strong partnership together throughout your child’s educational journey.

I have been an educator for over 14 years, and during those years, I have been a high school teacher, an instructional coach, and assessment coordinator. I feel privileged and excited to be beginning my fifth year with our Hawkins community. As in the previous years, we have many exciting things planned for the 2018-19 school year. As you may know we are a Leader in Me School and this is the fourth year on our journey. We have very strong beliefs about students and how we can help them reach their full potential. Instead of seeing children through the lens of a normal distribution curve—some kids are naturally smart and others are not—The Leader in Me paradigm sees that every child is capable, every child is a leader. This paradigm changes everything.

I am very much a believer in the power of collaboration.  Whether between home and school, teacher to teacher, or parent to parent, we all work better, accomplish more, and feel more effective when we set our sights on a common goal and pour all of our efforts into reaching our vision.  My belief has always been that excellence is never an accident, and we can only get there if we work as a team.  As part of this process, I have always maintained an open door policy and I will always take the time to listen and help problem-solve.

Hawkins has an outstanding and active PTO. They sponsor a variety of events and activities throughout the year and support our teachers by purchasing educational materials and equipment. We have many opportunities for parents to become involved through attending our PTO meetings and volunteering for events or classroom activities. Check out the PTO link for more information.

Hawkins Elementary has developed a reputation for academic excellence; it is a place where exceptional teaching and learning is the norm.  We are looking forward to a great year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 810-299-3900 or email me at kiehlerb@brightonk12.com.

    Sincerely,

    Basia Kiehler
