• Project Overview: 2023/24 Design Concept Category

    2023/24 Design Concept Category

The 2024 Design Concept Category requires the student to creatively design a front fascia (front bumper cover) of an existing fuel powered vehicle that is being reintroduced as an electric powered vehicle. Assume for this exercise that the vehicle currently exists, and you are provided with the current grill opening and surrounding sheet metal etc. Envision that grill opening needs to be filled with a solid fascia cover. Design considerations - the front fascia needs to be attractively styled to blend with the vehicle. It needs to completely seal the front, allowing the former engine space to be repurposed as storage. It must contain currently available accessories such as fog lamps etc. and (importantly) other accessories and features that you would consider desirable in a future vehicle. Show Your Work Students are required to show an initial sketch of their design concept and can show a design progression of refined sketches leading to their final submission and use any combination of computer graphics program, hand rendering, or physical model of what the “front fascia and accessories” will look like. A digitized model of the current grill opening and surrounding background in the form of a stp file will be provided from which a computer graphics program, hand rendering, physical model, or any combination of these can be used to develop the design. For those who choose to submit hand renderings, an image of the grill opening and surrounding background will be available as a pdf file that can be printed and used as an underlay for a basis of the design.

A submission of a physical model of the entire design or a portion of it submitted with a graphic design, in reduced scale is acceptable, i.e. wood, foam core, plaster, clay, 3D printer etc., but is to be no more than five pounds in total weight. Explain Your Process A written explanation of your initial design idea, evolution of the design, and/or a description of key features or how your ideas is used must be included on the Design Process Write-Up Sheet.

    Design
    • Digital drawing submittal must be in a pdf format and a resolution that will allow them to be printed on 11”x17” printer paper.
    • Hand drawings must be scanned as a pdf with a resolution that will allow them to be printed on 11”x17” printer paper.
    • Only the face of the items in the design need to be shown, internal mechanisms or fastenings need not be shown.
    • Design must include a Student ID block in the top right corner w/ the students name, email, grade, school, and teacher. Student and school information will be masked during judging. The student I.D. block is included with the contest materials.

    Design Process Write-Up
    • Students must submit a written description of the design process that was used in developing the concept or any research that was done and printed on 8.5” X 11” printer paper.
    • The depiction and description of the development of the design is a critical factor in the judging of your entry.
    • Write-up must include a Student ID block in the top right corner w/ the students name, email, grade, school, and teacher. Student and school information will be masked during judging.
Note: Physical models are accepted as entries but must be accompanied with the above-mentioned Design Process Write-Up.

    Download: Part Files
NOTE: 2 Files: Single Part File and Assembly File
All Parts are in METRIC (mm)
Be sure to change all units of newly created parts to mm before designing
    Creo Reference Video: Setting/Changing Units

NOTE: Model can not be cut away from without doing the following
    1. Copy Surface(s)
NOTE: Surface Copies will need to be grouped together to provide accurate meshing
    2. Paste Surface(s)
    3. Thicken Copies: 2-5 mm thick
