Multilingual Learners

Multilingual Learner (MLL) Program Overview

Brighton Area Schools supports multilingual learners from Kindergarten through Grade 12, embracing the rich cultural and linguistic diversity they bring to our community. Our Multilingual Learner (MLL) Program is designed to foster both English language proficiency and academic achievement, ensuring that every child has the support they need to thrive.

What is a Multilingual Learner? Multilingual learners are students with a primary or home language other than English who are in the process of acquiring English.

Enrollment and Identification Process When families enroll, they complete a Home Language Survey to identify the student's primary and home language. This survey helps us  identify students who would benefit from the WIDA Screener. The WIDA is an English Language Proficiency Assessment to evaluate abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Families will be notified of the assessment results, and students who qualify are offered tailored MLL services.

Ongoing Support and Annual Assessments Our MLL staff provides students with regular language support through a variety of programs and activities, such as small-group sessions, literacy groups, and one-on-one instruction. Each spring, multilingual learners take an annual WIDA assessment to measure progress and determine ongoing eligibility. Families receive an annual report on their child’s English language development.

Our Commitment to Multilingual Learners Our goal is to help multilingual learners reach a high level of English proficiency while honoring and maintaining their cultural and linguistic heritage. By fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment, we aim to empower students to engage fully in all aspects of school life. If you have any questions about our MLL program or need assistance with translation, please contact your child’s teacher or the school principal.

Thank you for choosing Brighton Area Schools as your partner in your child’s educational journey!
