Multilingual Learners

Multilingual Learners Mission Statement

Brighton Area Schools seeks to provide every child, regardless of national origin or native language, quality, and meaningful educational instruction. Consequently, students who are Multilingual learners (MLs) are provided instructional services through an English Language Development (ELD) program which is designed to meet their unique needs.

Brighton Area Schools offers Multilingual learners (ML) services for students in grades junior kindergarten through twelve who qualify for this support.  ML tutors work with our students during the school day to support them in content areas and to help them learn the mechanics of speaking, reading and writing the English Language.

ML Assessment

Students who qualify for ML services take the Michigan Department of Education's WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment). This test measures how well a student can read, write, listen and speak English. The data helps our teachers, tutors, administrators, and parents track a student's growth in English skills. Students are given the WIDA before ML services begin and then take it annually in March. Parents are sent a report of the assessment results. Our teachers and ML tutors maintain continuous communication with parents throughout the year.
